Chữ Phạn của tên gốc Kṛṣṇa là một tính từ có nghĩa là "Đen" hoặc "Tối",[1] thỉnh thoảng nó cũng được dịch là "tất cả hấp dẫn".[2]

Với tư cách là một tên của Vishnu, Krishna được liệt kê là tên thứ 57 trong Vishnu Sahasranama. Dựa theo ý nghĩa của tên, Krishna thường được mô tả là có làn da xanh hoặc đen tuyền. Krishna được biết đến với rất nhiều tên trong các văn bản, và titles that reflect his many associations and attributes. Among the most common names are Mohan "enchanter"; Govinda "chief herdsman", Keev "prankster", and Gopala "Protector of the 'Go'", which means "Soul" or "the cows". Some names for Krishna hold regional importance; Jagannatha, found in Puri Hindu temple, is a popular incarnation in Odisha state and nearby regions of eastern India.

Krishna may also be referred to as Vāsudeva-Krishna, Murlidhar, and Chakradhar. The honorary title "Sri" (also spelled "Shri") is often used before the name of Krishna.
